Mateo Tha Monster - Get Addicted
Mateo aka "Mateo The Monster" hopped out the cuddie in 1985. Raised in a
broken home by a single alcoholic mother with drug problems, the hard realities
of life hit him at a very young age. Having never lived in one neighborhood for more
than two years, Mateo was blessed with a wide view of different cultures which
eventually lead to his obsession with music.
"When I was growing up, there was never one type of music I listened to," the
young producer says of his childhood. "My mom had a good taste for music too,
we'd go from listening to 70's rock to 80's hip hop to reggae to you name it. Even
old shit like Earth Wind & Fire and the Temptations. This had a heavy influence on
my style when I first started messing with sounds.”
Although producing instrumentals is now Mateo's main focus, it’s not where his
hip-hop career. Mateo recalls, "when I was little I used to listen Big Pun, Biggie,
Mobb Deep, Big L, really just about everyone out in the early to mid 90's. This got
me into writing poetry and rhymes to vent a lot of my anger. I was hearing cats
talking about the same type of stuff I was going through, so for me Rap was a
given." These influences combined with a violent life have given Mateo the Dark
feel that you hear in his music.
Changing the game is the name of the game for Mateo. He feels that "everything
you hear out now sounds the same, give or take a few artists that are not following
what is considered to be mainstream.” In his opinion, the over abundance of "Pop-
Hop" or “Hip-Pop” is saturating the industry, making it hard for artists to make
records with feelings and instead putting them in a position to make what sells. "I
want to change that,” Mateo boasts. “I want to make people feel the music to excite
their emotions. Club joints are fine but most of us don’t live in the club. We all go
through the daily struggles of life; to me it makes me feel good hearing something
I can relate to."
Now that Mateo has joined forces with Ahktane and C.G to form the “Trifecta”
known as Ahktane Entertainment, the possibility of change is within reach. "It’s
going to take time and a lot of work but I believe we have the ability to reach
greatness, and with greatness comes the power to change," Mateo confirms. With
hundreds of potential hits under their belts Ahktane Entertainment has only one
way to go, Up!
